Currently, in terms of orthodontic treatment, it is essential not only to eliminate malocclusions, but also to ensure the health of periodontal tissues during and after the treatment.

Aim

This study aimed to assess gingival tissue condition near 31, 41 after a periodontal procedure, during and after orthodontic treatment.

Material and methods

A 29-year-old male patient, with a thin gingival biotype, abnormal lower lip frenal attachment, recurrent gingival inflammation within 31, 41 and a shallow oral vestibule, reported for periodontal treatment. Due to the additional presence of a partial anterior open bite, CR and CO discrepancy, diastemas near 31, 41 and their incorrect alignment, the patient was qualified for orthodontic treatment three months after the procedure using the tunnel and CTG technique. The periodontal procedure was performed to improve the periodontal tissue condition and as a prophylactic measure to protect against complications during and after orthodontic treatment.

Results

Orthodontic treatment eliminated abnormal teeth positions in the upper and lower arches. Correct relations of the upper and lower dental arch in the Angle class I with correct overbite and overjet were retained. Orthodontic treatment was performed and completed in a centric relation. Three months after the surgery, the extent and thickness of the keratinised gingiva were found to have improved, and there were no changes in soft tissues during and after orthodontic treatment.

Conclusions

The use of predictable procedure techniques before orthodontic treatment improves treatment outcomes.
